We are getting into the heart of vacation season. Have you been working hard all year to maintain a new, healthy living style? Or maybe you have been working on losing weight specifically for your vacation. Now that vacation time is finally here, are you stressed about continuing your new, healthy lifestyle while on the road? This month we will discuss tips for maintaining good eating habits while on the road. It is time to stress less and enjoy this much needed vacation.
Pack several non perishable snacks (look for TSA approved snacks in case of flying). By packing several snacks for travel and eating every 3-4 hours, you will avoid getting “hangry” or overeating to the point of discomfort because of feeling ravenous. Snacking also helps you to make better choices throughout the day because you are not in “starvation” mode. Some examples of healthy snacks include: nuts, jerky, and protein bars.
If Flying You Can Bring Your Own Meals
By packing your own meals, you will not have to worry about what is being served while on the plane. You can bring oatmeal or soup cups on the plane. A flight attendant can fill the cup up with hot water. Another bonus is bringing your own food helps you to save money by avoiding buying food on the plane.
Don’t Skip Breakfast
You should always eat a good breakfast before hitting the road; that way you will not have to resort to buying something that is more than likely not very nutritious at a gas station or at the airport. Eating breakfast helps you to feel saited and energized throughout the day. Eating breakfast also helps to prevent over-eating later in the day.
Pack a Reusable Water Bottle
By bringing your own reusable water bottle, you can ensure to stay hydrated while on the go. Drinking water also helps to keep you feeling full. If traveling by plane keep bottle empty until after you have gone through security that way you will not have to throw it away. Bringing a reusable bottle also saves you money and reduces waste.
Don’t Forget Your Veggies
Load half of your plate with veggies. By loading half your plate with veggies you can still enjoy the local cuisine without feeling guilty. This works especially well at buffets where the food is not always of the finest quality/nutrition.
Cook Your Own Food
If you don’t mind cooking while on vacation, you can always book a place with a kitchen or kitchenette. When you arrive at your destination, you can go to the local grocery store and buy fresh ingredients to make your own meals. Also if you can buy your snacks once you have arrived at your destination if you do not wish to pack a bunch of snacks.
These are just a few ideas to help you maintain your goals while on vacation. Remember to enjoy the local cuisine. This is your time to unwind and destress.
